About New Chandigarh

New Chandigarh is a planned township in the Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) district of Punjab, located near Chandigarh and south of the Shivalik Hills. In 2007, GMADA appointed Jurong Consultants, Singapore, to prepare an integrated master plan for Mullanpur. The Local Planning Area was renamed New Chandigarh on 28 May 2013. It covers approximately 15,000 acres and includes 32 villages, of which historic Mullanpur is the largest.

Residential development

New Chandigarh includes GMADA’s Eco City schemes alongside private residential developments. Eco City Phase I was launched in 2011 and covers approximately 400 acres. Its initial scheme included 836 residential plots.

Development is also being pursued through further Eco City schemes. GMADA’s 2026 notices confirm land-pooling activity for Eco City III, while Eco City IV was reported to be at the land-acquisition assessment stage in June 2026. Neither should be described as a completed township.

Medicity and healthcare

Medicity is a designated healthcare zone in New Chandigarh. An established institution here is the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, operated by Tata Memorial Centre under India’s Department of Atomic Energy.

The hospital was inaugurated on 24 August 2022 and is a fully operational 300-bed tertiary cancer-care facility.

Education City

GMADA has proposed approximately 1,700 acres for Education City, intended to accommodate schools, colleges, universities and associated educational infrastructure. The scheme remains a development proposal in GMADA’s published description; the operational status of individual institutions must be verified separately.

Environment and open spaces

New Chandigarh’s master plan allocates approximately 27% of its area to residential use. Around 33% is identified as green space, including land protected under the Punjab Land Preservation Act. Its planning framework also includes parks, recreational areas and protected river corridors.

Connectivity and sports

Existing regional connections include MDR-B and MDR-C, linking the planning area with Chandigarh, Kurali and surrounding destinations. Additional road infrastructure forms part of GMADA’s development programme.

New Chandigarh is also home to the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, operated by the Punjab Cricket Association. It has hosted IPL matches and has a stated seating capacity of approximately 38,000.
